Playing the US News Ranking Game

Some colleges place too much of an emphasis on the US News rankings. And I can’t blame them. So many students and their parents make such a fuss over whether or not a school is top 5 top 10 top 15 top 20 whatever that it’s natural for some schools to do anything it takes to boost their ranking. Let’s take a look at how a few of these institutes of higher education are doing it:
Northwestern’s Law school has decided on a very crafty way to admit more people (i.e. revenue sources) that they like, but might hurt their US News ranking- offer them conditional acceptances after they spend their 1L year at another law school. Classy! More on gaming Law School rankings.
Baylor University is a bit more desperate for their normal undergraduate experience. They recently had a system where they paid current college freshman cold hard $$ to retake the SAT and then even more if their SAT score was higher. Great idea!
